This drawing's size is 5'x4'. Yes, feet. I wanted to die when it was assigned.
This was my semester-long project for my art class. The topic we had to draw about was cancer, so I took a little bit of a dark approach on it.. He's reaching toward the light (or hope of surviving), and is getting stronger/more healthy the closer he gets to it. But his illness is dragging him down and trying to hold him back, and will claim his body if he stops to rest even for an instant. Whether he's successfully pulling himself out of his situation and regenerating, or sinking down to join the others... Is up to you.
(Totally not a cop-out explanation!)
My original idea was much, MUCH simpler, but everyone at my class kept tossing in different ideas that I just had to include.. Such as the faces, and the skeletal hand/muscles. It was like, every time I went to class it got a little bit creepier.
Time spent on this: 50+ hours over the course of 2 1/2 months.
Done entirely with pastels.
